Being a Mom of a High School Senior

Written by Scott Barnes on April 28, 2010.

[the daily life of a typical family with a high school senior]

BabyGirl: *chilling, enjoying her friends, and having the time of her life*

Single Ma: *stressed, worrying, and losing her hair*

So far, it appears that I’m taking it all in stride, but I can’t make any promises about future behavior or random outbursts.  In the meantime, while BabyGirl is floating through life without a care in the world, we have several looming dates and events that are quickly approaching:

  • IB Exams in 2 weeks
  • Senior Exams begin the week of June 1st
  • Prom 6/4: we’ve already purchased her prom dress…and at a GREAT price I might add.  It’s a one shoulder, floor length gown in a peach shade and soft, flowy spring material – perfect for the Grecian prom theme.  But we still need to find shoes and accessories.
  • Senior Trip 6/14
  • Senior Students, Faculty, and Parent Breakfast 6/15: this is when we’ll pick up her cap & gown and graduation tickets.  Unfortunately, they only allow 6 tix per student. :-(
  • Awards Ceremony 6/16
  • Baccalaureate Ceremony 6/17
  • GRADUATION! 6/18: ordered graduation announcements, should arrive 5/11 – perfect timing.  Ordered class ring and it arrived this weekend – be-YOU-tiful.  We still need to shop for a graduation dress – considering this one.
  • Graduation Party 6/18

Wow!  The day that I’ve been longing and dreading for the past 18 years.  In less than 2 months, senior year will soon come to an end.  Before I know it, I’ll be delivering my one and only child – my BabyGirl – and all of her personal belongings to the hands of strangers in a far away place.  A place where neither of us are intimately familiar with, but she’ll be expected to live part time for the next four years.  *sigh*  In fact, the on-campus housing application and $300 deposit are due on May 15th.  *big sigh*  It’s exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time.  I’ll need to find a hobby to calm my nerves.  Otherwise, you guys may be subjected to “woe is mommy” posts every other day between June and August. LOL!
